    Karunakran's ashes immersed on Saturday

    Thrissur: The ashes of former Chief Minister K. Karunakaran immersed in Bharathapuzha at Thirunavaya on Saturday morning. The ashes were taken out in a procession from Murali Mandiram, his house at Punkunnam here, at 3 p.m. on Friday. Earlier, KPCC vice-president Peethambara Kurup led the procession, which was accompanied by hundreds of party activists and relatives. The procession reached Mala, after passing through Seetharam Mill premises, Oorakam, Irinjalakuda, Vellankallur and Puthenchira.The ashes were kept at Mala for the people to pay homage.

    Post-funerary (adiyanthiram) rites were performed on Friday morning. Karunakaran's family, including his children K. Muraleedharan and Padmaja Venugopal, performed the rites. Hundreds took part in the 'adiyantira sadya' served at Sankaramkulangara Auditorium, here.

    Leader of the Opposition Oommen Chandy, Union Minister of State for Agriculture K.V. Thomas, Revenue Minister K. P. Rajendran, P.C. Chacko, K.C. Venugopal, K.P. Dhanapalan, MPs, Therambil Ramakrishnan, MLA, Congress leaders including Benny Behanan, Sarachandra Prasad, Rajmohan Unnithan, C.N. Balakrishnan, T.V. Chandramohan, V. Balram, film actors Ambika and Ramu were present on the occasion. K. Karunakaran died at a private hospital in Thiruvananthapuram on December 23 and was cremated on the premises of Murali Mandiram on December 25.
