Thiruvananthapuram: Even forest minister, who had rushed to the spot during midnight to save a tree from being cut, was not able to save it. The drama came to an end when those who decided to uproot the tree emerged victorious. The dramatic incidents unfolded in Sasthamangalam junction on Sunday night.
The banyan tree which stood at the Sasthamangalam junction was cut by a team led by Road Fund Board executive engineer Sreekandan Nair along with another team led by councilor Suresh Kumar. The vigilance team of the forest department prevented the tree from being cut. But with the help of natives, the team continued cutting the tree.
Though the forest officers told them that there was no permision of the forest department to cut the tree, natives did not pay heed. Forest Ministry Binoy Viswom was informed and he reached the spot by 11.30 pm. The group did not pay attention to his appeal too. Some natives had a verbal duel with the minister.
When the situation turned violent, the minister told them to cut him first and then the tree. By 12.30 am Sugathakumari and artist Sankar also reached the place and after a meeting with the residence association and the councilor, it was decided not to cut the tree further. But that assurance too did not last long.
A meeting on Monday morning decided not to keep the half cut tree as it would be a threat to people's lives. Later as per the written request of the Road Fund Board, the forest ministry gave permission to cut the tree completely. A consensus was also reached to plant more tree saplings. All the parties agreed to the same.
