Vizhinjam port work to start in March: Minister

Thiruvananthapuram: The work on the first stage of the proposed deepwater transhipment container project at Vizhinjam will start in the second week of March, state Minister for Ports V Surendran Pillai has said. Environmental clearance for the port project was expected to be finalised on January 19 at the meeting of the Centre's
Environmental panel in Delhi, the minister said in a press release here.

A memorandum of understanding would be signed this month with the Railway Vikas Nigam Limited, the public sector unit
under the Railways, for constructing the rail link from suburban Balaramapuram to the project site. An advance amount
of Rs 125 crore would be paid to the railways for this, the minister said.

Fourteen companies had submitted Request For Qualification (RFQ) to undertake the port work. They included
Indian infrastructure companies and consortiums of foreign companies from United Kingdom, Australia and Turkey, he said.

The Vizhinjam International Seaports Limited (VISL) would call for request for proposals by January 25. The technical
bids and financial bids would be examined by an evaluation committee which would select the firm that would undertake the
construction of the port, the release said. PTI
