Kozhikode : Refuting his ''removal,'' Indian National League (INL) Kerala unit general secretary P M A Salaam, MLA, today said party national president was not competent enough to take such an action.
Talking to newspersons here, he said when the National Council was scheduled to meet in Kolkata on January 22, the action taken by Professor Mohammed Sulaiman was inappropriate. On the removal announced by state unit president S A Puthiyavalappil at a press meet here recently, he said, ''It was due to lack of knowledge'' as power to take disciplinary action was vested with the National Council, according to party constitution.
Mr Salaam said he had opposed Sulaiman's participation in a rally organised by radical outfit Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI) in New Delhi apparently provoking him.
He said Mr Puthiyapalappil himself had advocated for merger with the Indian Union Muslim League in a phased manner, as reported by the party organ 'Chandrika.' Claiming that he never openly supported merger, Mr Salaam, however, said he would air his views on the issue in the party forum as persistent talk by certain quarters on the issue had created an atmosphere conducive for it.
Accusing Mr Puthiyvalappil of indulging in ''anti-party'' activities, he said such a person had no right to head the party founded by Ibrahim Sulaiman Sait.
A letter signed by 12 district secretaries had been sent to him expressing no confidence in him, Mr Salaam added.
