Kochi: The High Court would again consider the report by Justice T Chandrasekhara Menon committee which stated that Marakajyothi is a matter of belief and can't be probed. During January 14, 1999, 52 pilgrims had died while returning after witnessing Makarvilakku in Pampa. Even after 11 years of the tragedy the government had not published the report. The HC would consider the report now following a petition filed by U Kalanathan, on behalf of the Kerala Yukthivadi Sangam, seeking to publish the report in the bench of the chief justice.
Justice Chanadrasekhara Menon withdrew from conducting the probe citing that it is a matter of belief and the court or any investigation commission has no right to probe. But his followers justice Thottthail Radhakirshnan and justice PS Gopinath, while considering the reports by police and TDB, stated that even if it is a matter of belief, the court would intervene.
Justice Chanadrasekhara Menon had probed the veracity of makarajyothi during that time. He also appointed an advocate of the commission to witness the makarajyothi.
As per his investigation, Menon wrote in his report, 'Makaranakshathram was glowing in the sky and at the same time the sight of people burning camphor at Ponnambalamedu was also spotted'.
He said it is not the duty of the commission to inquire whether it is superstitious or not.
At the time atheists also submitted an article by former DGP and Sabarimala special officer N Krishnan Nair which stated that it is the TDB which is burning camphor in Ponnambalamedu and terming it as makarajyothi thereby fooling the people.
We can't go to find the real meaning of makarajyothi, Menon said. He also pointed out that Gandhiji had once said God is beyond definitions.
