Jnanpith-winning poet O.N.V. Kurup has made Kerala proud yet again by being honoured with the Padma Vibhushan, the country's second highest civilian honour announced on the eve of the 64 {+t} {+h} Republic Day.
Two other prominent sons of Kerala, eminent ayurveda scholar and physician K. Raghavan Thirumulpad and well-known Kathakali exponent Madavoor Vasudevan Nair, too have been honoured, the former posthumously, with the Padma Bhushan.
‘ONV', winner of the Kendra and Kerala Sahitya Akademi Awards and over a dozen awards for his film lyrics, had been honoured with the Padma Shri in 1998.
Author of several highly rated collections, ONV is a household name in Kerala and a poet listened to with great respect by connoisseurs of poetry across the country and different corners of the world.
Major works
His major works are Daahikkunna Paanapaathram (The Thirsty Chalice – 1956), Mayilpeeli (Peacock Feather – 1964), Agnishalabhangal (Fire Moths – 1971), Aksharam (Alphabet – 1974), Karutha Pakshiyude Paattu (Song of a Black Bird – 1977), Uppu (Salt - 1980), Thonnyaaksharangal (Nonsensical writing – 1989), Bhoomikk Oru Charama Geetham (A Dirge for the Earth – 1984) and Ujjayini (Ujjain – 1994).
For the late K. Raghavan Thirumulpad, one of the finest ayurveda scholars of contemporary times, the national recognition, in the form of the Padma Bhushan, has come a day too late, but is still a fitting farewell to a man who dedicated his whole life to promotion of ayurveda as a way of life.
