Pranab details strategy to retrieve black money

KOLKATA: Union Finance minister Pranab Mukherjee on Saturday said the government has taken a five-pronged strategy for bringing back black money stashed abroad and hoped it would yield results.
"When we will enter into treaty with countries, we will have relevant information to help unearth black money to get government share."
"The second issue was there are certain pending cases which we are also pursuing with respective countries," he told reporters here.
Mukherjee had on January 25 said there was no legal framework available right now with the government to reveal details about black money accounts and treaties were being negotiated with 65 countries for getting information about tax evaders.
He maintained that there were no clear estimates about black money and the government has constituted a multi-disciplinary committee to get studies conducted to estimate the quantum of illicit funds generated by Indian citizens.
Turning to the stalemate in Lok Sabha on the issue of JPC probe into 2G spectrum scam, Mukherjee said "I have called an all-party meeting to resolve the impasse in Parliament. The budget session is coming and we will try to see that the session and business are transacted smoothly because it is a very important session. What happened in the winter session should not be repeated".
Mukherjee has convened a meeting on February 8 ahead of the budget session in an effort to find a way out of the Parliamentary stalemate over the opposition demand for a Joint Parliamentary Committee probe into the 2G spectrum scam.
Black money should be used for welfare: Rahul
AURANGABAD: The black money stashed in banks abroad belonged to the people and must be utilised for their welfare, Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi said Saturday.
"The Indian Youth Congress is ready to ensure that this money can be channelised for public welfare activities," Gandhi told reporters here while replying to a question on the huge unaccounted cash stashed in foreign banks for tax evasion.
Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee had Tuesday said $462 billion to $1.4 trillion in black money is estimated to have been stashed abroad by Indians and all steps were being taken to bring it back.
Gandhi expressed shock at Maharashtra official Yeshwant Sonawane being burnt alive by the oil mafia and said there was a need to act against corruption and "cleanse the political system".
"I am shocked at the Sonawane case. I do not want it to be repeated," Gandhi told reporters on the final day of his three-day visit to Maharashtra.
Nashik additional district collector Sonawane was burnt to death in broad daylight by a gang of petrol robbers when he raided their warehouse near Manmad in Maharashtra Tuesday.
"Corruption is a serious issue in politics. So a two-pronged approach to tackle the menace" is necessary, he said.
"In the short term, we need to act immediately against corruption cases and in the long run there is a need to cleanse the political system," the Congress MP said. Gandhi stressed that there was a need to take a holistic look at corruption and take corrective measures.
Saying that there was no democracy in political parties, Gandhi said there was a need to change the structure and system while urging youth to join politics.
Gandhi condemned terrorism in all forms and said no religion preaches "killing of innocent people".
Addressing a media conference here on the final day of his three-day trip to Maharashtra, Gandhi said that religion and terrorism had no connection.
"I have not come across any religion which preaches violence or killing of innocent people. Terrorists kill innocents and I strongly condemn it," declared Gandhi, who lost his father Rajiv Gandhi to a terror attack in Sriperumbudur in Tamil Nadu in 1991.
The Congress general secretary stressed that terrorism is a crime and no terrorist crimes can be condoned as they kill innocents.
Gandhi said that political parties lack democracy but urged the youth to join politics through the Congress.
"Political parties lack democracy, their doors are closed," Gandhi said while appealing to young men and women to join his party.
He appealed to the youth to give 10 years of their life to politics if they want to see change in the country.
"I assure you, after 10 years, you will be proud of your decision, and the country's politics will take a new direction," Gandhi said, urging educated young men and women to come forward and join the Congress party.
Gandhi was addressing the media on the final day of his three-day visit to Maharashtra.
He is scheduled to travel to the Konkan region of the state later in the day as part of his drive to attract youth to the Congress.
