Maybe, she wants Army rule in Jammu and Kashmir: Omar

Hours after People's Democratic Party chief Mehbooba Mufti hailed the people of Egypt for pulling down the Hosni Mubarak government, drawing parallels between them and Kashmiris, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah said she might be in favour of Army rule in Jammu and Kashmir.

“Mehbooba Mufti calls for Kashmiris to replicate Egypt. Seems she wants Army rule as well since her party is in [the] Opposition now,” Mr. Abdullah posted on Twitter, his favourite channel of communication. He received many responses, one of which read: “Kashmiris don't need her advice to do that.”

After Mr. Mubarak stepped down, Mr. Abdullah tweeted on Friday night: “With the hope that Egypt wakes up to a promise of a government they deserve and we continue to wake up in peaceful surroundings.”

The Chief Minister's National Conference also expressed anguish at Ms. Mehbooba' statement.

Finance Minister Abdul Rahim Rather and Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ali Mohammad Sagar, in a joint statement, said: “It is unfortunate that the leader of a political party is linking the 2010 agitation [in Kashmir] with the Egypt agitation and wants democracy to take a back seat and the Army to take over.”

The PDP and its leadership should clarify whether they wanted the Army to take over Jammu and Kashmir, and democracy shelved.

“Her statement smacks of sheer frustration and desperation… she mindlessly wants the people of J&K to somehow replace the present dispensation even if it is at the cost of handing over the State to the Army.”
