    Mamoni Goswami still critical

The condition of noted Assamese writer and Jnanpith award winner Indira Goswami, who was admitted to the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) on Saturday, continued to be critical on Monday.

Dr. Goswami — popularly known as Mamoni Raisom Goswami — was taken to the hospital after she suffered an acute respiratory distress.

The GMCH authorities have approached the All-India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) to depute two critical care experts for examining Dr. Goswami's health. The State government, which has taken up the entire responsibility for Dr. Goswami's treatment, has set up a five-member panel of specialists for monitoring his condition and offering round-the-clock treatment.

Dr. Goswami, who played a key role in bringing the United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) and the Centre to the negotiating table, has been the recipient of a number of national and international awards in recognition of her literary and scholarly works. These include the Sahitya Akademi award in 1983, the Katha National Award for Literature in 1993, the Kamal Kumari Foundation National Award in 1996 and the Principal Prince Claus Award in 2008.
