    Oldest Ashok Chakra recipient dead

The oldest recipient of Ashok Chakra, the highest peacetime gallantry award, Lieutenant Colonel Man Bahadur Rai passed away at Jorhat in upper Assam on Monday night. He was 95.

Lt. Col. Man Bahadur Rai served in 8 Assam Rifles during the tumultuous era of the sixties.

He was awarded the Ashok Chakra in 1961 for his gallant action against insurgents in Nagaland, where he led a platoon through two hostile positions into the heart of their stronghold and dislodged them, a press release said.

    Full honours

The officer was laid to rest with full military honours at Jorhat on Tuesday. The DG Assam Rifles expressed deep condolences to the bereaved family and a wreath to honour the veteran soldier was laid at the site on his behalf.
