Will work towards strengthening party: Muraleedharan

Thiruvananthapuram : Late leader K Karunakaran's son and former Kerala Pradesh Congress President K Muraleedharan, who is all set to return to the Congress fold after six years of suspension, today said he was delighted and will work towards strengthening the party. ''I am happy on the decision to accommodate back to the party front,'' he told reporters here after the news that the Congress High Command had given green signal for his re-entry.

Mr Muraleedharan said his only request to the KPCC was that all those who would return to the party along with him should not be treated as second class citizens. ''They will really strengthen the Congress,'' he added.

Stating that he had to wait for about 20 months for coming back to the party after he first expressed his wish to be part of the Congress, Mr Muraleedharan said he was happy that he had returned with the concurrence of all leaders in the party.

Noting that there would not be any factionalism in the party, he said factionalism had become irrelevant in Congress.

Asked if he aspired for any position in the party, Mr Muraleedharan said he had already clarified that all he wanted was a re-entry into the party only as a primary member.

Mr Muraleedharan was suspended from the Congress in 2005 on disciplinary grounds. He along with his father formed the Democratic Indira Congress (Karunakaran) the same year. After a year the DIC-K merged with the Nationalist Congress Party.

In 2007, Karunakaran returned to the party but Mr Muraleedharan still was not given an entry.
