R. Dhanapal Raj, Vice-Chairman of the Bar Council of India, has been arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation for allegedly demanding illegal gratification from a Ghaziabad-based law college for a favourable inspection report to facilitate its recognition.
On Friday, he was produced before a designated court here which remanded him to seven days in police custody.
According to the CBI, Mr. Raj, in conspiracy with council member Rajendra Singh Rana, demanded a bribe for giving a favourable inspection report of the college.
The agency registered a case about two months ago and arrested Mr. Rana along with Manish Tyagi, a member of the college's advisory board, for allegedly receiving Rs.1 lakh from Mr. Tyagi on December 20 last.
Searches conducted
The CBI team conducted searches at several places in Delhi, Ghaziabad and Chennai. According to the CBI, over Rs.74 lakh was seized from Mr. Raj's house in Chennai.
Huge sums of cash, suspected to be part of the total illegal gratification received from Mr. Tyagi were also reportedly seized during searches at Mr. Rana's residence here.
During the searches, about 40 people, allegedly led by three advocates, entered Mr. Rana's residence and disrupted the CBI team from discharging its duties. They also snatched the case properties, which included the seized cash and other incriminating documents. The CBI lodged a complaint in this regard with the local police station.
The next day, Mr. Raj obtained an interim anticipatory bail for four weeks from the Madras High Court. He subsequently moved the Delhi High Court, but his petition was rejected.
Mr. Raj then approached the Supreme Court, which rejected his anticipatory bail petition on Monday.
