Pro-Telangana students clash with security forces

Violent protests rocked the Andhra Pradesh capital throughout the day, as pro-Telangana students repeatedly clashed at different places with security forces who foiled their ‘Chalo Assembly' plan on Monday.

At least ten students were injured after the police fired buck-shots and rubber bullets to quell the stone-hurling mobs, as tear gas canisters did not deter them on the Osmania University campus. Mobs made an abortive attempt to set fire to an MMTS train near the Jamai Osmania railway station, abutting the campus. In Habsiguda, windowpanes of eight city buses were damaged and another bus was set on fire near Amberpet by agitators.

Elsewhere, a group of advocates ransacked the Necklace Road railway station, barely 100 yards away from the Raj Bhavan, and set fire to the computers. The façade of the newly built station was damaged extensively.

The Assembly itself was marked by continuous disturbances and adjourned for the day without transacting any business over the issue of revoking the suspension of five TRS and TDP MLAs from Telangana. A curfew-like atmosphere prevailed outside the Assembly as police blocked all connecting roads to prevent any mischief, especially from the inmates of the Nizam College hostel nearby.

Molotov cocktails were lobbed at policemen during the disturbances which began on the OU campus after political JAC chairman M. Kodandaram spoke to the students.

The first confrontation took place at NCC gate on the northern side of the campus where students showered stones across the heavily fenced road at policemen.

As police used batons and lobbed tear gas shells, students retreated into the campus. Later, at the Jamai Osmania station, they stopped an MMTS train and attempted to burn it after damaging the windowpanes. Policemen rushed there only to see students running away. Another group jumped over the university compound wall and damaged eight buses at Habsiguda.

Till evening, see-saw battles were on between the agitators and the police on the campus.
