Yasin Malik goes on fast to get youths released

Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front chairman Yasin Malik on Saturday observed a hunger strike demanding the release of arrested youth. He said the youth should not be pushed to the wall forcing them to return to violence.

Joined by political leaders, including the former Hurriyat Chairman Abdul Gani Bhat and Bilal Gani Lone, Mr. Malik sat on a fast outside his party's headquarters. Hailing the people of Kashmir for moving from violence to non-violence, he said the “revolution in Egypt” should be seen as a replica of this “transition in Kashmir.”

“Even as we moved towards this transition it was unfortunately not recognised by India.” The time was ripe for recognising this and moving forward for a resolution of the Kashmir issue.

Mr. Malik alleged that the youth in Kashmir were being hounded and more than 3,000 arrested.

The police were continuing their crackdown on the youth. Relatives of several youths who were detained alleged that minors were being booked under the Public Safety Act.

However, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, in a Twitter message, denied that any minor had been booked.
