Kottayam: Agriculture minister Mullakara Ratnakaran has said a second stage of working was essential to maintain the growth of agricutlural sector.By getting a fair price for products will not help to maintain the growth of farm sector. The farmers were exploited by middlemen as corporates took over marketing of the products, Mullakara said after inaugurating the first public sector modern rice mill in the state at Vechoor here.
He said a ten per cent loss was incurred by transporting paddy from the field to the distant mill and getting back as
rice. The only remedy for this was to set up rice mill in the same locality and in the process loss reduced to three
per cent, he said.
The minister stressed the need for introduction of modern technology in agricultural sector, and development agriculture
related products.
He said paddy cultivators could undertake nurturing of cows which helps to get additional revenue.
The Rs.eight crore mill, built by public sector Oil palm India Ltd, would have the capacity of processing 12,000 tonnes
of paddy per annum. PTI
