Rice for Rs 2: Merchants to incur more loss

Thiruvananthapuram: The government declaration to allot rice at Rs 2 a kg is turning out to be a burden for rice merchants as the government has not allowed any money in this regard to the merchants. In order to fulfill the Govt promise, the wholesale dealers have to shell out at least Rs 10 lakh per month. The application form for BPL families to get rice at Rs 2 has been distributed through 14,250 ration shops in the state, The officials will scrutinize the application and if need be make personal visits. It is learnt that 25 lakh families would be benefitted.

But the government had not allotted any money to procure rice from food corporation. Rice got from the Corporation would be at Rs 8.10 a kg. When it would be given for Rs 2 a kg, would not the government incur a loss of Rs 6.10 a kg? As no money has been allotted, the ration shop owners would have to source the money. The next government after elections would be burdened to repay the merchants.
