    Nomination for first phase polls in Assam ends

    Guwahati: Altogether 194 candidates filed their nominations for 62 assembly seats in Assam, on the last day today taking the total number of contestants to 330 for the first phase of polling scheduled on April 4, Election Commission sources said here.

    The prominent candidates to file their papers today include Speaker Tanka Bahadur Rai from Barchalla, former AGP president Brindabon Goswami from Tezpur, former chief minister Hiteswar Saikia's son Debabrata Saikia from Nazira.

    Sitting independent MLAs and former ULFA militants Jiten Gogoi and Kushal Deori filed their nominations from Bokakhat and Thowra respectively and ASDC leader Mohit Hojai, jailed in connection with the NC Hills funds diversion scam, from NC Hills.

    The scrutiny of the nominations would be held tomorrow while the last day for withdrawal was March 21, the sources said.

    The constituencies going to polls in the first phase include 15 in the Barak Valley, 5 in the two hill districts of Karbi Anglong and North Cachar Hills district, 8 in Sonitpur and the remaining 34 in the Upper Assam districts of Dhemaji, Golaghat, Sibsagar, Dibrugarh, Tinsukia, Lakhimpur and Jorhat.

    Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi, who is in the poll fight at Titabor, is among the contestants whose luck will be tested in the first phase.
