Kolkata: Former West Bengal chief secretary Manish Gupta, pitted against his one time boss Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee as a Trinamool Congress candidate from the prestigious Jadavpur Assembly constituency, Saturday said he was happy and 'inspired' to contest the seat.

"I am very happy and inspired and it is a challenge to contest from Jadavpur constituency," Gupta told a TV channel here. Gupta was made chief secretary in 1998 when Jyoti Basu was the chief minister. He retired from the same post in 2001, serving a year under Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee.

"I will campaign with help of our party candidates," the former bureaucrat said adding the constituency was known to him and he had many relatives there. To a question, Gupta said he would try to understand the problems of the constituency and would utilise his 40 years' experience as a bureaucrat.

"We both were the candidates there and we will express our views, respectively," Gupta said when asked about his feeling to contest the chief minister in the constituency. He exuded confidence of winning the seat.
