Rice scheme: EC to approach SC against HC order

As the food supplies department has given orders to distribute rice for Rs 2 per kg to district and taluk supply officers, apprehensions still exist over its implementation. The main problem is not allocating rice for distribution under this scheme. Ration shop owners are of the opinion that rice, which is high in price, cannot be given for Rs 2. It was on February 25 that the government issued an order to distribute rice without taking the criteria of APL or BPL but on the basis of some conditions. Applications were received through ration shops. And the EC ban came at this time.

When the HC gave permission to continue with the Rs 2 a kg scheme, the government invited more applications. But the ration shop owners were not provided rice for distribution. The government is of the stand that dealers have to give the rice from this month's allotment. The traders have accumulated rice, which had to be sold for Rs 12.20 a kg and Rs 8.90 a kg.

If the same rice is distributed, the government had not clearly stated how the govt would fill the loss to the traders. As no special rice has been supplied for the project, the situation does not favor rice distribution at Rs 2 a kg.
