The Eastern state of Orissa finally has a new name and would now on be legally known as Odisha after Parliament on Thursday approved an to amendment in the Constitution and passed the Bill related to the change in name, as forwarded by the state assembly of Orissa.While orissa will now be known as Odisha, its language Oriya will be now on known as Odia. On Thursday the Rajya Sabha (Upper House) passed the Orissa (the Alteration of Name) Bill and adopted the Constitution (113th) Amendment Bill but after a brief debate wherein MP's cutting across party lines hailed the day as momentous and historic.
The Bill found support of Congress, BJP and the ruling BJD and was passed by all 169 members present and voting. Lok Sabha has already adopted these measures after the Centre received the resolution passed by the state Assembly. The bills were introduced in the Upper House by union Home Minister P Chidambaram.
