Fishing communities demand closing of nuclear plant

Mr R Biju, leader of Socialist Unity Centre of India-Communist (SUCI), cited scientific studies to warn that even without an accident, the Koodamkulam nuclear power plant will pose a threat to the population in Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Sri Lanka.'' 'Large quantities of radiation particles to be emitted when the plant becomes operational will be deposited on the rain forests of Western Ghats, which will affect not just the rich bio-diversity, but also a large population through rivers, rain and various species,' he said. The scientific community in Kerala had already established the impact of radiation on biodiversity including people.

'The scientific community in the rest of India is yet to inform the people of the real dangers of a nuclear accident. If radiation from Chernobyl can reach Holland 2,000 km away and from the Japanese nuclear reactors can reach California across the Pacific, how much longer can we say the citizens in this country are safe?' Mr Peter asked.

The controversial Koodamkulam nuclear plant is situated approximately 150 km south of state capital Thiruvananthapuram, he pointed out.

'Radiation effects from the nuclear power plant will cause cancer, genetic and skin disorders, reproductive, thyroid and other critical problems divning generations,' acclaimed documentary filmmaker K P Sasi said.

It is already reported that the Japanese nuclear accident has even affected the drinking water of Japan with deadly radiation which has forced the United States to ban food import from Japan, he said.
