Mumbai: The Governor of Maharashtra K Sankaranarayanan has expressed grief over the demise of Cardinal Varkey Vithayathil, head of the Syro-Malabar Church. The 84 year old Cardinal Vithayathil suffered a major cardiac arrest while participating in a mass at the chapel of the Archbishop's house yesterday afternoon and died in a private hospital.In his condolence message, the Governor has said, 'I was deeply saddened to know about the demise of Cardinal Varkey
Vithayathil, Major Archbishop of Ernakulam-Angamaly Diocese and the Head of the Syro-Malabar Church in Kochi on 1 April
2011.'
'Cardinal Vithayathil was a well known religious figure in Kerala whose contribution to the Church and to society at
large was immeasurable. Cardinal Vithayathil always supported the cause of interfaith understanding and dialogue to promote
communal harmony and goodwill,' Sankaranaryanan said.
'In his demise, the nation has lost a great Church leader and a fine human being. I pay my respects to the fond
memory of Cardinal Vithayathil and convey my heartfelt condolences to the members of the Syro- Malabar Church,' he
