On Baisakhi, 20 prisoners get relief, released from city jail

To mark the birth of Khalsa panth and the festival of Bisakhi, 20 prisoners were granted pardon and released from the Ludhiana Central Jail on Thursday.

“The Punjab government had taken a decision to grant remission to some jail inmates. While around 50 prisoners in the city were granted remission, among them, 20 were allowed to return home on Thursday. The rest will be let off after certain formalities are taken care of,” Minister for Tourism and Jails Hira Singh Gabria told mediapersons.

While the state government had announced a relief of one year for prisoners serving sentences between 10 to 20 years, those serving seven to 10 years will get relief for nine months. Moreover, those serving five to seven years sentences will get relief for six months, three months for those serving three to five years and two months for those serving a term of three years and less. However, prisoners serving sentence for heinous crimes, will to be granted no relief.
“To ease the pressure on jails, the upcoming larger and modern jails at Faridkot Nabha Mansa and Kapurthala will be ready by May 31. While Faridkot and Nabha jails will have 50-bedded hospitals, jails at Faridkot and Kapurthala will have rooms where prisoners serving long sentences can spend some days with their family,” Gabria said.
