New Delhi: Eminent music composer A.R. Rahman and tennis star Mahesh Bhupathi have joined the elite group of achievers to figure in the Limca Book of Records for their outstanding contributions in their respective fields.
Rahman and Bhupathi along with three other achievers were also given awards by the Limca Book of Records at a function here on Tuesday. The award instituted in 1992 has been instrumental in recognising and nurturing talents from all fields. Rahman, known for his foot tapping music like "Humma Humma" from the film `Bombay' and the latest release `Guru', accepted the award saying, "it was a great honour and has increased my responsibility as a music director".
Padma Shri winner Rahman also exhorted people to join hands in the fight against poverty. Bhupathi, who could not make it to the ceremony, sent a recorded statement thanking the organisers for boosting the morale of young achievers. An award is the testimony of the hard work and gives the feeling of being the privileged one and entices one to perform better, he said.
The others three achievers to be honoured by the Book of Records include boxer M.C. Marykom, first Indian woman to win three world boxing titles, Dr Devi Prasad Shetty for his contribution in the field of cardiology and George Abraham for his exemplary work for the blind.
Previous achievers who have found place in the book of Records include chess champion Koneru Humpy, mountaineer Bachendri Pal, adventurer Vijaypat Singhaniya and newsman Pranoy Roy. The book, in its 18th edition, has included photography as a new chapter and features over 10,000 achievements out of which 6,000 are new records from all corners of the country.
The future editions of the book will also be made available in Hindi and other vernacular languages.
