    Omar meets Singh, Sonia, PC; briefs them on political, security scenario

    NEW DELHI,
    Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah met Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh, UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi and Union Home Minister P Chidambaram here and discussed with them later political and security scenario in the State. He also discussed economic activities, ongoing Panchayat polls and just concluded Legislative Council elections for six seats in which NC, Congress alliance emerged victorious on five seats.

    The latest status of dialogue process between Centre Government appointed Interlocutors on Jammu and Kashmir with various shades of people in the State was also discussed during the meetings.

    Mr Abdullah’s meetings with all three Central leaders lasted half an hour each. Omar described the meetings as "excellent’’.

    Omar and Dr Singh took elaborative stock of socio-economic development, maintenance of peace and tranquility, holding of Panchayat elections, recently concluded elections to Legislative Council and prevailing politico-economic scenario in the State, official sources said.

    Omar briefed the Prime Minister about the headway made by the State police in identifying the killers behind the assassination of religious leader, Moulana Showkat Ahmad Shah. He also gave an account of the holding of Panchayat elections in the State after 30 years and presented resume of the arrangements made to conduct the polls in a peaceful manner.

    The Chief Minister briefed the Prime Minister about victory of coalition candidates in the recently held elections to six seats in the Legislative Council.

    Expressing gratitude to the Prime Minister for liberal financial support by the Centre to the State in translating its development agenda into reality, Mr Abdullah highlighted the necessity of enhancing the current year’s plan allocations for Jammu and Kashmir to ensure equitable and holistic development of all regions and sub-regions in the State.

    He sought the Central approval for the report submitted by the Task Force regarding prioritization of development projects in the State. He stressed on early implementation of the recommendations of expert group under the Chairmanship of Dr C Rangarajan to help Jammu and Kashmir to address unemployment crisis.

    Sources said the Chief Minister sought the Central assistance for upgradation of Srinagar Airport, expansion of Jammu Airport, extension of runway at Kargil Airport and wet leasing of helicopter service in Jammu and Kashmir to ensure connectivity to the hilly, remote and inaccessible areas especially during the winter months.

    Omar called for speeding up the work on railway, power and 4-lanning of National Highway projects adding that these schemes are of higher economic value for the people of the State.

    The Chief Minister expressed gratitude to the Prime Minister for his keen interest in the resolution of political issues in a political manner and development of Jammu and Kashmir on fast track.

    The Prime Minister assured his full support to the Chief Minister for peace and development initiatives.

    Mr Abdullah also met UPA chairperson and Congress president, Sonia Gandhi here and discussed various issues relating to the political affairs and economic development in the State.

    They reviewed the functioning of coalition Government and expressed satisfaction over cohesion and coordination between National Conference and Congress in dealing with the matters of public interests and ensuring good governance to the people.

    The understanding and political harmony depicted by the coalition partners during the Legislative Council elections resulting in the success of all the coalition candidates was viewed with appreciation. The strengthening of the coalition and tackling of all the challenges on development and political fronts in future with same spirit and political sagacity was also discussed.

    Omar extended his felicitation to Mrs Gandhi for the victory of coalition candidates in the Legislative Council elections.

    The Chief Minister briefed Mrs Gandhi about the holding of non-party based Panchayat elections in the State after about 30 years with a view to transferring power to the public representatives at grass roots and devolution of authority at the Central level. He also elaborated the initiatives of the State Government taken to transfer functions, functionaries and finances (3Fs) to the newly elected Panchayats.

    Expressing gratitude to UPA Chairperson for her keen interest in the development of State and support to the coalition Government, Omar said that the coalition Government is working in tandem and unison to ensure equitable development of all regions and sub-regions in the State.

    The UPA chairperson reiterated her full support to Omar-led Government in addressing challenges on economic and political fronts.

    Later, the Chief Minister, and Union Home Minister, P Chidambaram discussed matters relating to the State’s present security scenario and political developments.

    The two leaders deliberated upon the issues pertaining to the measures aimed at maintenance of law and order and peace in the State. The status and progress of dialogue process between the Interlocutors and various shades of opinion in the State also came up for discussion in the meeting.

    The Chief Minister briefed the Home Minister about the assassination of religious leader, Moulana Showkat Ahmad Shah and the headway, Jammu and Kashmir Police has made in identifying the killers. The issues relating to the Dogra certificate were also reviewed.

    Matters relating to the holding of non-party based free and fair elections to the Panchayats after over three decades in the State and putting in place security and other arrangements for the same were also discussed in detail.

    The two leaders reviewed the peace initiatives and measures in place to maintain law and order. Measures to curb militancy in a befitting and coordinated manner were also discussed.

    Issues pertaining to AFSPA and Disturbed Areas Act were also deliberated upon in the meeting.

    The two leaders reviewed the pace of work on various Central projects under implementation in the State. The Chief Minister underlined the need for accelerating the pace on projects and engaging more and more locals in the works.

    Mr Abdullah appreciated the Union Home Minister for his personal interest in the restoration of permanent peace in Jammu and Kashmir and resolution of political issues through a meaningful and purposeful political discourse.

    The Union Home Minister assured his full support to the J&K Chief Minister in his efforts to restore tranquility and maintain peace in the State.
