Kolkata: The CPM banned Anil Basu from addressing any more public rallies and made him issue a statement of apology. CPM MP Anil Basu apologised on Sunday for his comment on prostitution while questioning the sources of Mamata Banerjee's funds as the CPM struggled to control the damage already done. . 'The remarks I made about the Opposition leader at a public rally in Hooghly were uncalled for. This is against our party's culture and policies. I realise the effect that the remarks have had on people's minds and I apologise,' Basu's statement said.
Even the CPM's women's wing, the Ganatantrik Mahila Samity, was embarrassed. Its West Bengal chief Shyamoli Gupta said as a women's leader she was ashamed that an MP of her party could say such 'politically indecent' words. 'There is always some mudslinging from both sides in a political battle but to raise the chastity of a woman is something that goes beyond decency,' said Gupta. The party is doing whatever it needs to do, Gupta said.
Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee, having called Basu's remarks 'an unpardonable offence that did not become a Communist leader', said that if required strict action including possible expulsion from the party will be taken. While admitting that Communist leader Anil Basu had used impermissible language against Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee, Communist Party of India (CPI) general secretary A.B. Bardhan Sunday said the path was shown by West Bengal's opposition parties.
'The language used by (Left Front's major ally Communist Party of India-Marxist leader) Anil Basu was impermissible and the party has taken very proper action against him,' said Bardhan.
'But it was not one-sided. The language used by the Opposition parties against leaders of the Left Front and the ministers were equally bad,' he said.
Criticising the media for continuously airing the recording of the comments made by Anil Basu in a public rally, Bardhan said: 'Despite use of utterly reprehensible languages by the opposition leaders some people are not reacting. Media should be balanced in its coverage'.
He also expressed his satisfaction on the actions taken by the CPI-M leadership.
The CPI-M leadership has forced Basu, a former Lok Sabha member, to apologise in public and barred him from addressing any public meetings for the party.
'Battle of politics is not a slinging match between two groups. Now after the apology the chapter should be closed and we should move ahead,' said Bardhan.
