Suresh Kalmadi sacked as IOA president after 15 years

A day after the arrest of its influential president Suresh Kalmadi, the Indian Olympic Association sacked him on Tuesday evening.

Egged on by Sports Minister Ajay Maken who had said the government would move in if the IOA did not sack him, the IOA ended Kalmadi's 15-year reign in the sports body.

Senior Vice President V K Malhotra has been appointed the acting president of the prestigous association.

IOA officials were on an informal stock-taking exercise ever since the arrest to decide the future course of action on Suresh Kalmadi.

Kalmadi, former Commonwealth Games Organising Committee chairman, was arrested by CBI on Monday for allegedly awarding a contract for the mega event to a Swiss company at an inflated rate of Rs 141 crore in a "pre-meditated" manner.

Many of the officials were present at the court on Tuesday where Kalmadi was remanded in CBI custody for eight days.
