Five pesticides hazardous than endosulfan in use in Kerala
Thrissur: Five pesticides, which are hazardous than endosulfan, are being used for agricultural purposes in Kerala. Those are carbofuran, forate, monocrotophos, methyl parathion and metasystox etc. Among them, carbofuran is widely used. Though the farmers use the same, they are not aware of its hazardous effects, as majority comes in the name of the company and not in its chemical name. As per the presence of chemical, WHO classified pesticides in four categories. The pesticide with more chemical is red, then yellow, blue and green. The classification is based on experiments done in rats. A certain dose of pesticide is being injected in rats and among the rats if 50 % die that pesticide comes under the label LD 50. In any phase of the experiments, no tests are being conducted on the effect of pesticide in nature and soil. As many as 27 pesticides have been banned completely in India.
