Highway trauma centres to help save more lives

With over 1,30,000 road deaths annually in the country, over 160 trauma care centres are being planned to be opened along the major highways in the next five years to save lives by ensuring immediate treatment to the victims.

So far, 113 trauma centres have already been provided financial assistance in 15 States and are at various stages of progress. This was announced by Union Health Secretary K Chandramouli after inaugurating a two-day workshop with stakeholders for developing Decade Action Plan on Road Safety 2011-2020, on Tuesday.

He said, “Fatal road accidents as also non-fatal but debilitating injuries, caused due to road accidents, lead to no less morbidity, hampering economic development. It is only logical to avoid loss of life as per a strategic action plan.”

The workshop was organised with an aim to discuss the WHO draft Action Plan for Decade of Road Safety 2011-20 in which representation from Road Transport Ministry, Ministry of Home Affairs, National Highway Authority of India as also experts from WHO, IIT, Central Road Research Institute, Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers participated. The global launch of the Decade is planned for May 11, 2011.

Director General Health Services Dr RK Srivastava pointed out that the scheme “Assistance for Capacity Building” is being implemented with a view to ensure timely treatment to the victims of road traffic injury.”

The scheme — with a total outlay of732.75 crore — would develop a network of 140 trauma care centres along the Golden Quadrilateral during the 11th five year plan period has been underway, he elaborated.

The Quadrilateral covers 5,846 km connecting Delhi-Kolkata-Chennai-Mumbai-Delhi; North-South and East-West corridors covering 7,716 km connecting Kashmir to Kanyakumari and Silchar to Porbandhar, respectively, with national highways.

According to WHO Global Status Report on Road Safety, over 50 million are injured on the world’s road every year and as many as five million deaths happen due to road accidents.

In India, road deaths increased by nearly 40 per cent between 2003 and 2008, and the more progressive and developed states like Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu were the ones most affected.

What is more concerning is that more than half of the road accidents victims are in the age group of 25-65 years, the key wage earning and child raising age group.
