    'Molester' KEM hospital doctor suspended

MUMBAI: A KEM hospital doctor, in charge of the of the ICU ward in the paediatric department, was suspended on Sunday for allegedly molesting the mother of a two-month-old baby. The doctor has confessed to the crime.

According to a hospital source, the incident took place around 2:30 am on Sunday when Dr Sunil Birhade, the resident doctor on duty, called the mother to a room in the ward on the pretext of discussing her child's health. "When she entered the room, he first asked her how the baby was doing. After replying to his queries, even as she turned to leave, the doctor held her hand and tried to hug and kiss her. The woman managed to free herself from his grip and run away," said a senior doctor from the hospital. "In the morning, her husband and some others created a ruckus in the ward. The authorities intervened and got to learn about the incident."

The hospital has formed an inquiry committee. "We haven't started the inquiry yet, but the doctor has been suspended till the probe is over," said a member of the inquiry panel.

This is far from being a unique incident at KEM. Almost two years ago, another casualty medical officer in the hospital was accused of molesting a 26-year-old patient. While there had been a police complaint at the time and the accused was arrested, he was released on bail. He was, however, suspended by the hospital.
