Kerala exploring ways to stop production of endosulfan

Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala is exploring ways to see if the state can intervene to stop production of endosulfan. A high level meeting, to be convened on Wednesday, would discuss and seek legal opinion. The meet would also recognize an action plan, prepared by the Kerala Agricultural University, to use bio-pesticides instead of chemical pesticides. Though the state had banned endosulfan, HIL Kochi, which is a central government undertaking, is going on with the production. The production and controlling of pesticide are under the control of the centre. Though the world recognized banning endosuflan, some countries, including India, wanted some exemptions.

Kerala is exploring ways to know whether the state can intervene to stop the production. Agricultural minister Mullakkara Ratnakaran said that a group of states would form a panel if the center is trying to create a delay in the ban in the name of exemptions.
