The BJP’s core group is meeting in the Capital on Wednesday to discuss its revival plans for Uttar Pradesh, which also includes the return of fiery leader Uma Bharti back to the party fold. Bharti’s return has been cleared by the RSS and the BJP’s top leadership is expected to give its formal approval to her re-entry.
The party is desperately in search of a “leader” in Uttar Pradesh who could not only inspire party’s cadre but also attract its core support base, which disintegrated to the benefit of its rivals, particularly the Bahujan Samaj Party. Assembly election is due in the state in April-May 2012.
“Her induction to the BJP fold is one of the issues to be discussed in Wednesday’s meeting. The party is serious about Uttar Pradesh and wants to start preparing for the forthcoming election there when the SP and the BSP have already declared most of their candidate,” a senior BJP leader said here on Tuesday.
Uma belongs to Lodh community, an influential OBC group of UP, and her combination with Kalraj Mishra, a Brahmin, could help the party stitch the magical combination of Brahmins and non-Yadav OBCs in the state.
BJP chief Nitin Gadkari also dropped enough hints on Uma issue saying discussions were on. He told reporters in Jaipur on Tuesday, “I cannot talk about her chances (of returning to the party) but discussions are on within the party on the issue.”
BJP sources claimed Gadkari was also interested in giving some ‘important assignment’ to former organizational secretary Sanjay Joshi in Uttar Pradesh, but it would take a few more days before a formal announcement is made in this regard. Joshi’s return to active politics has been vehemently opposed by a section of the BJP leadership.
“Gadkari feels Uma and Joshi could spring a surprise in UP, where the party is in dire straits. Uma is a popular leader who had been associated with the Ramjanmabhomi andolan while Joshi, a RSS leader, is known for his grasp over cadre,” sources close to Gadkari said.
The core group on Wednesday would also discuss future political strategy for UP, which also include a statewide agitation on corruption and relevant issue. The BJP top brass would also discuss the ‘PAC drama’ and plan some sort of a programme in UP to “expose” the SP and the BSP, who sided with the Government in trashing the parliament committee’s report on 2G scam.
Party wants to take its anti-corruption campaign to other parts of the country.
As a part of this strategy, Chief Ministers of BJP-ruled States are meeting in Mysore (Karnataka) on April 10 and 11 for an “internal audit” of functioning of their Government and discuss measures needed to refurbish their image.
