Balangir/Bhubaneswar: In a tragic train accident at Sikiri , at least 26 persons were injured, four of them seriously, when the Koraput-Rourkela express train coming towards Balangir hit a derailed goods train near Sikiri railway station, 54 km from here at 12.30 am on the intervening night of Wednesday.
East Coast Railway (ECoR) sources said a coal loaded freight train while moving from Brajarajnagar to Simadri, passing through Sikiri railway station (seven km from Titlagarh) got derailed at 12.35 am. As a result, the train tilted towards line no. 1 and collided with the 18108 Koraput-Rourkela Intercity Express, which was passing on line no. 1. Three bogies, (one 3rd AC and two General Second Class) out of 11 bogies got affected on the Titlagarh-Sambalpur section of Sambalpur railway division, resulting in blocking of both up and down lines.
Divisional Railway Manager, Sambalpur with his team of officers and relief train reached to the accident site and started the rescue operation. ECoR General Manager AK Vohra, General Manager with all high-level officers from the headquarters at Bhubaneswar have rushed to the spot. However, no casualty was reported.
A total of 14 passengers were injured and were sent to the hospital at Titlagarh. Four of them are stated to be critical. The stranded passengers were evacuated from the accident site by special train and arrangements have been made for refreshments for the passengers at Balangir railway station. Due to the accident some trains have been cancelled, diverted and short terminated such as Sambalpur-Rayagada-Sambalpur Intercity Express and Titlagarh-Howrah Ispat Express. The Bhubaneswar-Kurla Express will run via Sambalpur-Jharsuguda instead of Titlagarh. Surat-Puri Express will run via Titlagarh-Vijayanagram instead of Sambalpur. Raipur-Bilaspur Passenger will run up to Titlagarh and back. There will be no services between Titlagarh and Bilaspur.
