    3 yr old endosulfan victim denied treatment, dies

    Kasargod: A three-year-old endosulfan victim, who was allegedly denied treatment at the Government general hospital, died here on Wednesday. Authorities at the General Hospital here suspended the pediatrician charging him with neglect of duty. The DYFI workers also attacked the private clinic of Dr. Narayana Naik later in the day.Prajitha, daughter of Sasidhara and Jayanthi, from Nattakallu, near Mulleria, one of the worst endosulfan-affected localities in the district, died at a private hospital on Thursday morning.Prajitha belong to category one in the list of endosulfan affected patients.

    Prajitha had been suffering from breathing problems and epilepsy and her condition worsened late on Wednesday night, her mother took her to the General Hospital.However, the hospital authorities are said to have refused to admit the child stating that the paediatrician was on leave, and suggested that the child be taken to the doctor's house.

    The doctor, Narayana Naik, who diagnosed the child, asked them to go back to the General Hospital and admit the kid there. Saisidhara said the doctor also charged Rs.100 as consultation fee, though the parents had the State government's 'Snehaswanthwanam' card for suspected endosulfan victims.

    Sasidhara said that though the kid was admitted at the hospital by 4.45 pm, no doctor checked her till 8 pm. The condition of the child turned worse late in the night and she was shifted to the nearby Kasaragod Institute of Medical Science (KIMS), where she died on Thursday morning. Her father Sasidhara is DYFI Beloor village president.

    As the news spread, a group of Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) workers, Youth Congress, Youth League and Solidarity activists took out march and held protests there.

    Later DMO said that the Health Minister directed him to suspend the doctor Narayana Naik and Unnikrishnan, driver of the General Hospital ambulance.

    The police registered case on the death. In the report submitted by DMO to health minister, it was stated that there were failures from the part of general hospital authorities in treating Prajitha. District collector KN Satheesh allotted an emergency aid of RS 10,000 to Prajitha's family. Prajwal and Prajesh are his brothers.
