Ministry of Railways is working on a three digit all India security helpline for passengers on moving trains. This would be quite similar to the police helpline (100) available in many Indian cities.
“If things go according to our plan, we would be able to roll out the all India helpline in a year from now. There are certain issues and the department is working overtime to address them,” a senior official with the ministry said on Saturday. The networking of all RPF units and its security control room has already started.
The idea behind the project is to provide passengers with a platform through which they could inform security personnel about crime and other such activities on moving train. It was found that in many cases there was delay in the information about crime on moving trains reaching to the Railway Protection Force (RPF).
“With the helpline project coming into force, a passenger could make a call to the three digit number and report any such activity. The control room, in return, would alert the next station of the train and, also, the RPF personnel on that train,” official said.
Prevention of crime, registration of cases, their investigation and maintenance of law and order in Railway premises as well as on moving trains are the statutory responsibility of the State Police, which they discharge through Government Railway Police (GRP) of the State concerned. The Railway Protection Force (RPF) supplements the efforts of Government Railway Police (GRP) by deploying escorts in important trains in affected areas.
Presently, 1,275 trains are escorted by RPF daily on an average, in addition to 2,200 trains escorted by Government Railway Police of different States. More than 100 cases of dacoity and 247 cases of drugging on moving train were reported in the first six months of the last year. Over 3,000 other crimes were also reported during the same period.
