Victory of people, new freedom for Bengal: Mamata

Kolkata: Calling it a victory of the people and appealing for calm, a joyous Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee Friday said here that the assembly elections had brought new freedom to West Bengal after 34 years. Addressing jubilant crowds at her Kalighat residence in south Kolkata, Banerjee said that Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, who is currently in Afghanistan, had called her to congratulate her on the victory and Congress chief Sonia Gandhi too had sent her wishes.

'Prime Minister Manmohan Singh called me up from Afghanistan. He said he is overwhelmed with joy,' the 56-year-old said.

'Since morning, people have been calling me. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh called me. This is the people's victory. He has congratulated the people of Bengal. Sonia Gandhi also called and congratulated, also many others from India,' she told the roaring crowd.

'This is a complete victory of democracy, victory of Ma Matti Manush (mother, earth, people)... victory of exploited people, ordinary people, tribals... everybody supported us. This is a historic verdict. After 34 years, Bengal has got new freedom.'

She also appealed for calm and asked the people to cooperate with the Election Commission.

'Let us go about things peacefully and cooperate with the Election Commission. Please maintain peace,' she said in her speech during which she also quoted Rabindranath Tagore.

Trinamool Congress-Congress led Combine is to oust the Left Front which has ruled Bengal since 1977.
