Thiruvananthapuram: Malayalam cine actor Salim Kumar, who bagged the national award for his touching portrayal of an elderly Muslim yearning to travel to Meccah to perform the Haj in the movie 'Aadaminte Makan Abu' (Abu, son of Adam), will be sponsoring a Haj pilgrim this year.In the film, directed by Salim Ahmed, which was also adjudged as the best feature film, the actor essayed the role of a street vendor who saves every possible penny to fulfil his life-long wish of performing the Haj with his wife.
'During the shooting days I could understand and empathise with the agony and ecstasy of a devotee who intensely long
to make the trip toe Holy Meccah despite his strained circumstances. So, on being awarded for the role, the first
thought that crossed my mind was of bearing the expenses of a Haj pilgirm', Salim Kumar told PTI.
'I am a devotee myself. Only a devotee can understand another one. While playing the role of Abu, I had gone through
the emotions and anxieties of a person struggling to fulfill his spiritual desire,' he said.
Salim said he had requested Muslim League leader Dr M K Muneer to select a deserving person for the sponsorship.
'I do not know the details of the Haj pilgrimage and technicalities of undertaking the journey. But, I want to make sure that the person I support deserves it. So I have requested Dr Muneer to help me in selecting the beneficiary,' he said.
Salim and Tamil actor Dhanush (Aadukalam) were earlier this week selected for the national award for best actor. PTI
