In a gruesome accident, 18 people were killed when a jeep carrying them hit a train at an unmanned railway crossing near Bharia-Bishanpur village in Madhubani district of Bihar.
According to a East-Central Railway official, the accident took place when a jeep carrying passengers collided with Nizamuddin-Garib Rath Express while crossing an unmanned railway gate. Altogether 22 people were travelling in the ill-fated jeep.
"While 12 people died on the spot, the others breathed their last on the way to hospital while one succumbed to the injuries at the hospital. Three seriously injured have been admitted to the local hospital where their condition are said to be critical", chief PRO of ECR Neeraj Ambastha said.
According to locals, all the victims travelling the jeep were on their way to participate in the victory procession of a recently elected Mukhia Veena Devi, wife of Anirudha Yadav.
According to PTI, at least 20 persons, including 19 women, were killed and four others have been injured.
Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has expressed his deep sorrow over the incident and announced Rs 1.5 lakh compensation to each of the victims' family.
The Prime Minister, who also holds the Railway portfolio, too has announced compensation of Rs 2 lakh to the family members of each of those killed in the incident, and Rs 50,000 to those seriously injured in the incident.
