Malayalam to be made first language this year
Thiruvananthapuram: The cabinet meet on Wednesday has decided to make Malayalam the first language in the school this academic year itself. Chief minister Oommen Chandy said that on the other day during a function Sukumar Azhikode, ONV Kurup and Sugathakumari also made the demand. Though the previous government issued an order for making it the first language, the further proceedings were not progressed due to protests from some corners. Education minister Abdu Rab said that due to finding difficulty in sufficient number of periods, Malayalam wouldn't be made the first language this year. For some days `Mathrubhumi' has been rigorously publishing stories on the attempts to sabotage the move. In this CM himself took the initiative and made the cabinet to take the decision. As prescribed by the previous government, IT periods would be given to Malayalam. At present there are 4 periods for IT. There are only two periods for those students who did not took Malayalam, as first language. In future that would be made three. In oriental schools where studying Malayalam is not mandatory, would have to start teaching it. In VHSE there are only English and there too Malayalam would be made compulsory. Malayalam would be mandatory in central syllabus school too.
