Chandy in dilemma over Pillai's plea to avoid the sentence

Thiruvananthapuram: Oommen Chandy government is in dilemma over the plea of jailed Kerala Congress (B) leader Balakrishnapilli seeking the cabinet to make recommendations before the governor to cancel his jail sentence. The government is of the stand that when at one side it wants to give a corruption free image, it would be no good to make Pillai free, who is in jail for a corruption case. But Pillai is making strong demand before the Congress leadership. Buy June 13 the parole period of Pillai would come to an end. As per section 161 of the constitution, the governor can cancel the sentence of any accused on any case. But that needs the recommendation and decision from the part of the cabinet.Though such a section exists, till so far no persons in India have been given concession on its basis. Even if the government gives such a recommendation, it's not sure whether the governor might accept it. If government also accepts the same, there are chances that government might gain the wrath of the apex court, which sentenced Pillai in the corruption case.
