    Four new types of coral reaves found in Lakshwadeep

    Kozhikode: The research team of Calicut university Zoology department has found four kinds of coral reaves. They were discovered from the ses near Agathi Island in Laskhwadeep 20-30 feet deep. Dr KV Laser and team from the molecular biology lab conducted the classification using gene structure. The coral belongs to the species sarcophyton of the softcoral class. The information on the cytochrome oxidase gene of the mitocondrias of the coral reaves, has been published in the gene bank of National Centre for Biotechnological Information in USA. Dr UVK Muhammed, Dr Padmakumar, Dr PA Rosy, VP Akhilesh, K Mashhoor and VS Shaniba were part of the research team .

    The funds for research was provided by the Union Forests and Environment ministry. So far, 106 varieties of soft coral have been identified in Laskhwadeep and in India 208 varieties.
