Thiruvananthapuram : The entire Opposition Marxist-led Left Democratic Front (LDF) today staged a walk out in the Kerala Assembly to protest against the police lathicharge on students who were agitating against the government's stand on self-financing professional colleges. Leader of the Opposition V S Achuthanandan said several students were injured in the 'brutal police lathicharge' at several places.
The government was reluctant to take action against the policemen who unleashed violence, he alleged.
However, opposing the admissibility of an adjournment motion sought to be moved by Mr M A Baby of the CPI(M), Chief Minister Oommen Chandy said police used force only when students unleashed violence.
Six police personnel, including a deputy commissioner, were injured in the incident in the city last week.
Mr Chandy said the government was willing to hold discussion with the Opposition to solve the problems in the self-financing educational sector.
The government wanted to ensure 50 per cent seats under merit quota in self-financing professional colleges.
Mr Achuthanandan also offered the support of the Opposition to find an amicable solution to the problem.
