    Kannur: Union Minister of state for Power K C Venugopal today said there was a need to have consensus between politicans and environmentalists to solve power generating issues in Kerala.Speaking after inaugurating state-level second phase of 114.55 crore of electrification work under the Rajiv Gandhi Gramina Vydhuthi Karna Yojna (RGGVY) scheme for Malabar region at Chandanakampara in Irikkur constituency here, he said aim of the UPA government was to generate 80,000 MW of electricity for the next coming years.

    Stating that in Kerala even one MW of electricity could not be generated due to enviornmental issues, he said the generation of electricity from Thatcher project in Orissa to the state had stopped due to the environmental issues.

    He alleged that previous Kerala government had not utilised central assistance at time. The Centre had alloted funds in 2010, but the state utilised only 27 per cent of funds, he added.

    He said the power department in the state was the argest department to get central assistance from the UPA government.

    State Electricity Minister Aryadan Muhammed said the KSEB had suffered a loss of Rs 1,350 crore this year but electricity tariff was not increased from 2003.
