Thiruvananthapuram: A decades-old library, which houses a large collection of rare books on Indian history, culture, spiritual traditions, temple arts and mythology, has been renovated and opened for public here. Founded by erstwhile Travancore King Sree Chithira Tirunal Balarama Varma in 1936, the 'Sree Chitra Central Hindu Library' has been a sought after hub of historians, ideologists and students of spirituality in the city for many decades. Besides rare titles in Malayalam, Tamil, Sanskrit and
English, the library has a good collection of palm leaf manuscripts. With the library building running into disuse, a large number of books stacked there had been damaged. Recently, the Travancore Devaswom Board (TDB) drew up a plan to renovate the building and save the books and documents, that survived the ravages of time, and to open them for public. As part of its revival, new books worth Rs 10 lakh were bought to replenish its stock and attract book lovers attention to the institution once again, a TDB spokesman said. Jnanpith laureate O N V Kurup inaugurated the renovated library at a function here last evening. PTI
