Latest News from India - Chandy Government survives a scare

Thiruvananthapuram : The Kerala Assembly was plunged into turmoil today as voting for the Appropriation Bill, 2011 was apparently delayed by the Treasury benches for want of majority. The opposition Marxist-led Left Democratic Front (LDF) claimed that their 68 members were present as against the ruling party's 67 at the time when they demanded poll.

Leader of the Opposition V S Achuthanandan alleged that Finance Minister K M Mani and Speaker G Karthikeyan had intentionally delayed voting for half-an-hour to bring sufficient number of MLAs in the House to pass the bill.

The trouble broke out during the final reading of the Kerala Appropriation (Vote on Account-2) Bill, 2011 when former Finance Minister Thomas Issac wanted to table a white paper on the state's finance. The Speaker denied permission, leading to noisy scences in the Assembly.
