Latest News from India - Comtrust take over: Employees to go on strike again

Kozhikode: Employees of Comtrust weaving factory is planning to go on a strike again due to uncertainity in taking over the factory by the state government. In the convention of employees to be held on August 7, the strike plan would be announced. The previous LDF government had issued an ordinance to take over the factory and had sent it for recognition to the central government. But the centre returned the ordinance stating that a mere ordinance alone wouldn't suffice but a bill must be passed in the assembly to takeover the factory.

When UDF came to power, expectations were rife that proceedings would move fast. But the takeover move, which was mentioned in the budget by the previous government, was avoided from the budget presented by K M Mani. During the LDF regime, KPCC president Ramesh Chennithala held a hunger strike in front of Comtrust demanding take over. CM Oommen Chandy and minister P K Kunhalikutty also participated then. When those who led the strike came to power, the employees were with high hopes. Though the industries minister said talks would be held, no follow-up action was made.
