New Delhi: The Madhav Gadgil Committee that was appointed by the Union Environment ministry in 2009 to study about environment protection in Western Ghats, has submitted the first part of the report to Minister Jayanthi Natarajan on Tuesday.As per the report, the committee has denied permission for the proposed Athirapilly hydroelectric project as the project is proposed to be built in a highly ecologically fragile land. The report also denied permission for Gundiya water irrigation project in Karnataka.
The report had classified the Western Ghats into three as per their environmental importance. The ghats is spread in 6 states of Gujarat, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Goa. The first level includes places which are declared as national heritage sites and sources of rivers. Athirapilly is included in this section. If the project is implemented, that will grossly affect the biodiversity.
18 places in Kerala are included under ecologically fragile land category.
