Group Capt finally arrested
Group Captain Amit Gupta of the Indian Air Force was arrested here on Tuesday in connection with the alleged suicide of former IAF officer Anjali Gupta.
Additional Superintendent of Police, Rajesh Chandel told The Pioneer, “Amit was arrested under Section 306 of the IPC (abetment to suicide) in connection with the suicide committed by Anjali at his residence here on September 11.”
Later, in the afternoon, Amit was produced in a district court that sent him to jail under judicial custody till September 26. Surprisingly, the police did not seek police remand of the officer. Amit urged the court for arrangements in a special cell, but the request was turned down.
Earlier on Tuesday, the post-mortem report of Anjali Gupta, who was found hanging from the ceiling fan in the house of Amit, suggested that she died of asphyxia.
Anjali’s family members have alleged that she was having ‘live-in’ relationship with Amit since 2001 and that continued even after she was court-martialled in 2006, the ASP said. They claimed Amit had promised to marry her but as it did not materialise, she committed suicide.
However, Amit told the police that he only knew her as his subordinate and was not having any other relationship with her, Chandel said.Anjali’s last rites were performed on Monday at the Subhash Nagar cremation ground.
Meanwhile, Indian Air Force has also initiated an inquiry into the matter.
Anjali’s family members also told the police that the allegations of sexual harassment leveled against senior officials by Anjali Gupta in 2005, were at the behest of Amit. However, the police and IAF officials who were present at the police station at the time of such allegations did not take it seriously.
The district police found Amit had been changing his statements quite frequently, thus they did not believe him. The family members of Anjali, who had reached Bhopal on Monday morning, had also brought letters written by Anjali’s mother to senior IAF officials informing that the sexual harassment allegations leveled by Anjali six years ago were at the behest of an officer. She produced 10 such letters before the police.
She also produced few letters of Anjali in which she told her about Amit stating that she would soon get married to him.
