The Players and the Musoc, the two cultural societies of Kirori Mal College that have produced several talents, have ridiculed the statement made by Mani Shankar Aiyar. The Rajya Sabha MP at a seminar at St Stephen’s College on Monday had said that Kirori Mal College has produced no new talent after Amitabh Bachchan.
Taking offence to the statement made by Aiyar, teachers at KMC went on to call Aiyar an ‘Ugly Stephenian’. Mocking his poor IQ, the Principal of the college Dr Bhim Sen Singh said that even a BA (Pass) student of KMC could teach general knowledge to Aiyar. The college that has not only produced good artists, but has also produced good academicians, he said, adding Aiyar should have checked his facts before commenting about a prestigious institute like KMC.
“Aiyar is certainly not amongst the elite and the intellect that Stephen’s has produced. People like Aiyar are not the best people to be heard and talked to. Though a Stephenian, he is a specimen of Ugly Stephenian,” said Keval Arora, who as advisor to the drama club of the college has produced several Bollywood players. Arora also said that KMC did not need to list its talent to the outside world. “People like Aiyar, who have inadequate information make statements like these,” he added. Arora is also disappointed by the statement that Aiyar has made for Hansraj College. “I don’t know how Hansraj College is going to react to this. But I for sure will be writing about the notorious comment,” he added. Keval also feels the journalist (Karan Thapar), who had called Aiyar a ‘Black Duck’, has given him an appropriate name. Players is the Dramatics Society of KMC and is known to have produced several talented people, including actor-director Satish Kaushik, Bollywood director Habib Faisal, who won National Award this year for his film Do Dooni Chaar, Kulbhushan Kharbanda, director Kabir Khan of NewYork and many more.
Besides theatre artistes, the college has also given singers like KK, Subir Malik and his band Parikrama from the MUSOC Society. The most recent in the list is Digvijay, one of the finalists in the reality show India’s Got Talent. Reacting on the statement made by Aiyar, Sumitra Mohanty of the MUSCO said, “I think the Minister should check out his facts before commenting on a reputed organisation like ours. I wonder what he will achieve by demeaning a reputed institution like KMC,” she said.
KMC has not only produced good dramatists and singers, but several academicians and intellectuals have been a part of this college. Sitting Justice of Supreme Court Anang Patnaik, Sitting Justice of Delhi High Court Kailash Gambhir, Chief Minister of Odisha Naveen Patnaik, famous Astro Physicna Biman Nath, Professor Pulin Nayak, a former director of Delhi School of Economics have all been the alumni of KMC.
Highlighting the achievements of KMC beyond music and theater, Mohanty informed that KMC is the only college in Delhi University to have been invited to NASA to participate in various projects. Since 2009 each year, we have been representing Delhi University there. Does Mr Aiyar know about it?” questions Mohanty.
Much disturbed by the comment made by Aiyar, the Principal of the college Bhim Sen Singh questioned the achievements of Aiyar. “Who is he? Is he a Nobel Laureate? He must know his limits,” said the annoyed principal. “Looking at his level of maturity and his knowledge in English, I think even a BA (Pass) student of our college will be able to teach some general knowledge to Aiyar,” added Singh. Singh also said that his tussle with Ajay Maken should not be disturbing others. “If he has to settle scores with Maken, there are many other ways. Why is he targeting the education institutions?” the principal said, demanding an apology from Aiyar.
