Leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha Arun Jaitley on Saturday charged that Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s authority had depleted markedly in recent months, resulting in his not being able to take crucial policy decisions.
“What we have today in the country are a beleaguered Prime Minister, squabbling Ministers and a paralysed ruling party...With his depleted authority, the Prime Minister finds himself only involved in the day-to-day running of the Government, without being able to take crucial policy decisions,” Jaitley said, while addressing a public meeting at Birla Kreeda Kendra here in the evening.
Maintaining that the current situation in the country was an offshoot of dynastic politics, Jaitely said, “This kind of a happening is inevitable to political parties which primarily adopt dynasty as mode of succession for creation of new leadership. Dynasty is a negation of both merit and meritocracy.”
Unlike the ruling Congress, the BJP had a significant number of competent leaders, with most of its Chief Ministers being young and good performers. “The BJP is willing to crystallise the leadership debate in India to be a contest between merit and dynasty. We firmly believe that till such time the myth of the charisma of dynasties is smashed the real worth of Indian parliamentary democracy will not be realised,” he said.
Expressing satisfaction over the position that the BJP was in at the moment, Jaitley said, “The BJP has emerged as the principal focus of non-Congress political activity. Our organisational environment is positive. Our party’s programmes have been highly successful. Our positioning on political issues has struck a chord with the people.”
“In Parliament the Government has been on the mat. The result of this is that the BJP is now emerging as the alternative focus to non-Congress politics in India. We are determined to pursue this political agenda,” the senior leader said.
Jaitely, however, conceded that one of the immediate challenges before the BJP was to expand the National Democratic Alliance (NDA). “The country can no longer think in term of a two-party system. Time has come for the BJP to expand the NDA in view of an early election which cannot altogether be ruled out,” he said.
In his speech, Jaitely spoke at length on the failures of the UPA Government.
